In my master plan of taking 2 weeks off work to move and prepare everything, I am somehow down to my last week and feel as though I’ve barely started, despite the very large pile of boxes in the corner and the very large pile of unused and no-longer-wanted crap that has gone on to the great dumpster in the sky, not to mention the growing pile of ‘donate me’ items in the spare room awaiting pick-up tomorrow.
Here’s the few tidbits I’ve gleaned from this particular move so far:
- Shredded paper is easier to toss than un-shredded. It’s lighter, the trash-man picks it up without complaint, and it fits in a large black trash-bag with ease.
- When you are allergic to dust, don’t bother pretending that you can ignore it or that you’ve been such a stellar housekeeper that you won’t need the OTC med. Just take the damn pill and save yourself the sinus headache.
- Clear out your coat closet early, if you’re moving in the summer, and designate that the ‘in the car’ closet for things that will travel with you instead of with the movers.
- Shutting off the TV is the surest way to get a room finished quickly. Once I disconnected the TV in the living room, it was done in about an hour.
- Rubbermaid plastic bins are small kitchen appliance heaven. Wrap them in a towel, toss a couple in a bin, and they are safely tucked away for the new home.
Special thanks for #5 to veteran move bestie in St Louis.
I’ve also learned how desperately I hate packing. So much so I almost buckled and paid someone to come finish. Sigh. But no, the inner Depression-era grandmother in me won out and I’m toughing it out alone.
